Name change for major Towson development

What was known as Towson Circle is getting a new name — as well as a previously announced huge makeover.

The development located at York Road and Joppa Road is now to be called Circle East.

Retail Properties of America Inc. plans to blend its Towson Square (Cinemark, BJs, etc.) with a new re-developed Circle East and, through a partnership with AvalonBay, it plans to add 371 residential units and 75,000 square feet of retail. They will also reconfigure the existing retail into a more “street-friendly, walkable component with markedly increased access and visibility,” and bring the retail from underneath Joppa Road to street level.

Circle East — also known as the old Hutzler’s building — was until recently home to Pier One, Trader Joe’s and Barnes & Noble — all of which are now gone. Trader Joe’s re-opened in The Shops at Kenilworth. The other retailers do not have new Towson-area locations.
