Rodgers Forge resident Aislinn Bratt was sworn in this month as the newest student representative on the Baltimore County Board of Education. It sounds like she had some stiff competition for this spot. Congrats, Aislinn!

BCPS said in March:

The results are in! Aislinn Bratt, a junior at Towson High School, has been selected by her fellow students to be the next student member of the Board of Education of Baltimore County.

Bratt was chosen after a half-day forum of hundreds of student leaders from across the county. They met March 18 at Loch Raven High School to hear from candidates for the position and cast ballots for either Bratt or the other finalist for the post, Autumn Burton of George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology.

The forum marked the first time students have directly voted on a candidate for the student member. Bratt’s name will now be forwarded to Gov. Larry Hogan for consideration and possible appointment to the position.

A Rodgers Forge resident who currently serves as her class secretary, Bratt is a nationally competitive debater and a mentor for middle school debate students. She has organized a college readiness seminar and competes in track and field and year-round soccer. In her application essay and her remarks to students on March 18, Bratt identified inequities within the BCPS system she would seek to address as a student member on the Board.

“I also want to be the voice of those who have yet to be heard,” Bratt said. “The position of student member of the Board of Education would allow me to impact my fellow students, participate in advancing change in BCPS, and ensure all student voices will be heard.”

Prior to this year, student members had been chosen and recommended by committee of BCPS educators, staff, and student leaders. The forum and student balloting was created to increase student participation, interest, and investment in the position of student member to the Board.
