“Mom, can I have some more yogurt? It’s so good!”

Success! We have homemade yogurt, and it was so easy. My kids and husband loved it. My son ate his with granola and a tiny bit of honey, and my daughter had frozen blueberries in hers. They both asked for seconds.

I left the yogurt in the machine a long time (about 7+ hours, I think) and that made it pretty tart. Next time I’ll do it for maybe five hours. But it was still good. I added dried milk to the liquid milk to thicken it.

To quote my husband, “We’re ready for the apocalypse now. All we need is a cow!”

Update: For my second batch, I left it in the machine just five hours and it was PERFECT. Not tart, and it was very thick — almost like Greek yogurt.

You can also play with the tartness by adjusting the amount of yogurt culture you use. Less culture = less tart. But you will need to experiment to still get a good consistency.

Thanks, Johanna! … I need to email you: I was just trying last night to buy the ingredients for homemade laundry detergent and can’t find them.

I bought the same machine after reading your post and we love it. I have been making skim milk yogurt with only 1/3 cup of milk powder and none of the geletin they suggest. I just have to remember to same about 1/4 of one batch to "spike"the next batch. Anyway I have only been leaving it for 4-4.5 hours and it is wonderfully thick and not at all tart. Thanks so much for the recommendation. We have also used the yogurt to make yougurt cheese which is good.

Yay, I'm so glad you like it. I also found Yogourmet's yogurt culture powder at the Health Concern store in Towson. The recipe calls for 10 grams but I only use half. Or I just use yogurt. … I, too, add powdered milk to the cold milk. I use one cup of powdered milk for two quarts of milk. No gelatin. In the machine for 4.5 hours. It's so good!
