Curly-hair tips and tricks from a Towson stylist

Erica Brannock of SASS Salon in Anneslie has strategies and secrets for making the most of your natural curls:

If you have naturally curly hair, then you know just how temperamental those tresses can be. So what’s the secret to making curly hair look fabulous? It’s actually pretty easy once you know what to do.

Of course you need to start with a great haircut by a stylist who understands curls, but your at-home styling process is also key.

I have worked with so many women who were amazed at what those curls could do once they started treating them properly. Here are the secrets to gorgeous curls:

-Start with quality products. I recommend the Deva Curl line because it doesn’t contain sulfates, parabens or silicone.

-The only time you should use a comb is in the shower when your hair is covered in conditioner. Don’t ever comb or brush dry curls because that instantly gives you frizz.

-Don’t wash your hair every day. You can rinse it and condition it, but there’s no need to wash it too often. (Especially if you’re using quality products that don’t leave a bunch of gooey buildup behind.)

-When rinsing out your conditioner, bend forward so your hair is reaching toward the floor. After rinsing, while it’s still sopping wet, add your styling product by scrunching it into your hair. Only then should you stand up straight again.

-Don’t wrap your wet hair in a towel! That dries it out too much, and they’re rough and can actually damage your hair. Instead, get a towel specifically made for curly hair (Deva Curl sells one and so do other companies), or better yet, just use an old cotton t-shirt!

-Use your fingers to gently style your hair into place. You can add extra volume by winding your hair into curls and clipping them up as they dry.

-Air dry whenever you can. If you’re in a rush and need to use a blow dryer, be sure to use a diffuser — and only get it about 75 percent dry and let air do the rest.

Don’t touch your hair when it’s drying. Just leave those locks alone. Once your hair is dry, gently scrunch it to remove any cast (crunchiness) from your styling product. But then stop touching it. Nothing good comes from poking and prodding curly hair.

That’s it!

Embrace those curls, and with these little tricks, your styling regimen will take just a few minutes and you’ll look amazing!
