The principal of Carver Center High School, Karen Steele, sent an email to parents this morning to let them know someone had created an Instagram account that mimicked the school’s official account. The fake account was “racially charged” and the posts were “offensive, derogatory, and hurtful to the individuals about which posts are directed, as well as to our students of color as a whole.”
She said the staff is working to find out who created the account, which she said has apparently been deleted, and added that “hateful, disrespectful, and disruptive speech will not be tolerated in our Carver Center community – a community based on diversity, openness, and acceptance for students of talent.”
She also praised students for alerting staff to the fake account.
“Their commitment to each other and their commitment to a better world is inspiring. I know our students will continue to make us aware but I am asking for our entire community to take ownership of ensuring that our Carver Center community is a safe and supportive environment for all of our students. Please continue to notify us when concerns arise that compromise our Carver Center community.”
