Towson-area elections heat up after filing deadline

The primary election battle is now officially on following the filing deadline Tuesday night.

Jay Payne, a real estate agent who lives in Idlewylde, has filed to run against David Marks in the Republican primary for the Baltimore County Coucil’s fifth district. Two Democrats, John Michael Torsch and Alex Foley, are also running in the primary.

In the third district, which includes Timonium, Doug Zinn and Ed Hale Jr. — the son of developer Ed Hale Sr. — are challenging incumbent Wade Kach.

State Del. Steve Lafferty, who represents the Towson area, does not have a primary opponent, but he will face Republican Stephen McIntire in the general election.

Another Republican has jumped in the race for state Senate in the 42nd district: WBAL radio’s Jimmy Mathis will face Del. Chris West in the primary. Democrats Gretchen Maneval of Stoneleigh and Robbie Leonard of Timonium square off in the Democratic primary. They are all running to fill the seat of Sen. Jim Brochin, who is running for County Executive.

Incumbent BCPS Board of Education member Julie Henn will face former Baltimore City Health Commissioner Peter Beilenson in the general election to decide who will represent the Towson area.
