Driver claims possible involvement in hit-and-run of bicyclist on N. Charles

Baltimore County officials released this update today:

Crash Investigators continue to search for answers after a citizen came forward to report that they may have been involved in the hit-and-run crash that fatally injured cyclist Aaron Michael Laciny, 20, on Charles Street Monday night.

Police were called to the 300 block of Overbrook Road this morning after the citizen saw media coverage of the crash and recalled striking what they believed to be debris left in the roadway Monday night. Crash investigators believe that the citizen’s vehicle may be a participant in the crash sequence, but continue working to identify all possible leads.

Crash investigators were also able to locate surveillance video [top video, above] from a nearby Exxon Station that depicts the cyclist passing by just prior to the crash. A second video [second video, above] depicts vehicles traveling away from the crash site just after the crash occurred. Police are asking anyone with information on any driver or vehicle they believe may have been involved in this crash to contact police at 410-307-2020.

“especially on Charles, which is a very dangerous road for pedestrians and bikes.”

this statement speaks volumes about our society’s priorities.

This is not a comment to blame the cyclist in any way, but merely an observation: In the first video that shows the cyclist going by, I see no lights on him. The video is grainy, so it’s hard to tell. But I will say that late at night about a week ago, I was driving north on Charles and encountered a cyclist who had no lights, no reflective vest, nothing. I was almost on top of him/her before I realized the cyclist was there. Please wear bright lights and reflective clothing — especially on Charles, which is a very dangerous road for pedestrians and bikes.

The prior reports on this say he had no lights unfortunately. Not sure about whether his bike had reflectors.
