Hogan’s Labor Day school plan is “madness”

Baltimore SunA Baltimore Sun editorial calls Gov. Larry Hogan’s decision to mandate that schools not open until after Labor Day a “shocking abandonment of a fundamental — and customarily Republican-espoused — principle of leaving such decisions up to local school boards.” You can read it here.

Do you agree, or are you busy making plans for your (extended) summer next year?

I don’t mind the post-Labor Day start, even if that puts a wrench in work schedules. It is nice to feel that August is free and family-time. But I’m not sure about the heavy handedness of the Governor’s law-like decision? Will schools have to rework binding teacher contracts and lots of other logistical chaos (I know Baltimore County public school students already face enough chaos with experimental new curriculum, tech, and grading policies — all over the place). What other personal priorities will the governor mandate as an end-run around the legislature or voters? What about a voter referendum instead? Just because I feel pretty okay with this idea doesn’t mean his unilateral decision-making doesn’t make me uncomfortable. Rule of law and democracy and all that.. All hale King Larry? Father Hogan knows best?
