WYPR has a story about the growing amount of surveillance on public transportation. Video recording has been around for a while, but now the use of audio — recording riders’ conversations — is growing. State Sen. Jim Brochin, who represents Towson, says he’s against it:

“I’m worried about people who have no other mode of transportation — black, white, Hispanic, whatever — who have no other mode of transportation and don’t have the economic means to have a car, having to give up their civil liberties in order to ride the bus,” he said. “It’s just not fair.”

Wow, this is horrific. Doesn’t the state of Maryland have laws against recording people without their consent?
