County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, as you probably heard, on Wednesday said the county wouldn’t accept $257,000 in reimbursement from Baltimore City for helping during the Freddie Gray unrest. County Councilman David Marks said in a Facebook post Saturday that the council was not consulted about the decision and that “while the county should be a good neighbor, we have our own pressing public safety needs and I believe reimbursement was appropriate.”
In his announcement, Kamenetz had said “Baltimore County is a partner with Baltimore City in every way. This past spring, I directed Police Chief Jim Johnson and Fire Chief John Hohman to provide whatever assistance was necessary to help the City deal with a very difficult situation. The residents of Baltimore County recognize that a strong Baltimore City is key to regional strength and stability, and for that reason, the County will not seek reimbursement.”
Do you think Kamenetz was right to decline the money? Should he have sought the council’s input, or vote, before deciding?
By all means – this is not Kevin Kamenetz’s money we are spending but Taxpayers. He should have conducted a vote as to how to proceed with this issue. Towson needs more Police on the street – Chief Jim Johnson needs to wake up or stop ignoring what is happening at the Mall.
