Heron (crane?) spotted in Rodgers Forge

craneMy husband spotted this crane/heron/largefeatheredfriend perched on a Rodgers Forge house this morning. When it flew off, its body must have spanned at least 6 feet, likely more. I know we have foxes, hawks and the occasional deer. Is it normal to see a heron?

A great blue heron used to spend the entire year in the stream which runs near the junction of Joppa and Thornton Rds. in Ruxton/Riderwood. Even when stream partially frozen over. Maybe its progeny need more space. Herons have been known to go in backyard ponds for goldfish-maybe that is the attraction.

Over the years I’ve occasionally seen herons during the summer flying over Meadowbrook Swim Club, but never in Rodgers Forge and never in December.
